Here's a video you'll be tempted to re-watch at least five times. It's by a guy from Toronto. The shitty '90s throwback thing is supposed to be so over, yet somehow he improves on it to the point of being more on trend than an American Apparel catalogue and you just believe his stupid little song. Hmm. It's like commodified child-like glee. What genre would this fall under? Can we call it post-ironic-core? Can't describe music these days without inventing an idiotic "-core" suffixed adjective.
And here is video you should watch at least five times. Or at least until you appreciate the delicate complexity of the fucking genius lyrics. It's by my current obsession, Momus, who should have been bigger than Adam Ant and Pet Shop Boys put together, but instead has been making underground pop records for the past 20 years while writing books and generally being a true uncompromising vagabond bohemian with an eye patch and a Japanese girlfriend - arguably a better fate than the bloated '80s has-been he could have been. Momus is my new Bowie. He also has a brilliant blog and is coming to the Barbican on October 22nd for a Jacques Brel tribute concert.
